Time to talk iPhone

Tomorrow, Apple will take center stage for another big unveil that will either be another sensation or a big flop. Front and center will be Apple’s Tim Cook, the connoisseur who once handled the company’s operations and is now CEO after Steve Jobs’ resignation last August. Cook is hopefully leading the keynote for the highly anticipated unveiling of the newest iteration of its blockbuster smartphone, the iPhone 5.

There’s just one problem however. How will they make it so that the soon-to-be-unveiled smartphone will surpass its predecessor? Apple, if not now then soon enough, will be facing a classic example of the innovators dilemma, the curse of Silicon Valley.

The innovator’s dilemma is when a company takes a significant lead in a given domain; it becomes less able to come up with game-changing advancements in that field. However, as Mr. Levy implies in his recent article, Jobs rid Apple with the innovator’s dilemma with his so-called innovator’s gyre, where each leap forward leads to more and more innovations. Looking at what happened with the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone, the iPad and back to the Mac; Mr. Levy has some really good point. But how will they do this with the iPhone 5 you ask? The rumor says it all, but we have to take this with a grain of salt until Apple confirms this tomorrow.

The iPhone 5 is rumored to have a bigger touch screen, better antenna, an 8-megapixel camera and 1 GB of ram. Now that certainly packs a punch for a mere smartphone. Combined with a little iOS 5 magic such as Airplay, iMessage, Siri, the iCloud and more beautiful apps, innovator’s gyre it is.

Another juicy rumor is that facebook will do some announcements themselves at the conference, probably in line of its long-awaited iPad app, heavy integration on Apple devices (even Apple TV) but who knows? These guys are full of surprises.

Here’s to hoping that tomorrows Apple event would be one of its greatest, maybe Steve Jobs, heaven may permit, might appear for a “one more thing” one off, just for the last time.
