Celebrate Steve

RIP Steve JobsLast night I went to a friend’s party together with a bunch of engineering, computer science and IT students and had a couple of drinks (I forgot how many, were pretty much heavy but infrequent drinkers).

One thing led to another and we were talking about Steve Jobs (and I‘m sure it’s not the alcohol talking), how he moved industries with his disruptive innovations, inspired people (including ourselves) with his philosophy and amazing, even borderline obsessive work ethic. The fact that he passed away, just a day after the 4S’ unveil, tells us what kind of man Mr. Jobs really was. A couple of shots and reminiscing and tears welled up eventually.

On another note, perhaps its only fitting that after we lament his death, it’s necessary that we celebrate his life and lasting legacy. Tim Cook, Apple CEO sent an email to employees, informing them of a celebration of Mr. Jobs’ life on October 19th, at Apple’s campus in Cupertino.

Team,

Like many of you, I have experienced the saddest days of my lifetime and shed many tears during the past week. But I’ve found some comfort in the extraordinary number of tributes and condolences from people all over the world who were touched by Steve and his genius. And I’ve found comfort in both telling and listening to stories about Steve.

Although many of our hearts are still heavy, we are planning a celebration of his life for Apple employees to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place. The celebration will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 10 a.m. in the outdoor amphitheater on the Infinite Loop campus. We’ll have more details on AppleWeb closer to the date, including arrangements for employees outside of Cupertino.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Tim

Bloomberg detailed the cause of death today, saying he “died at home of respiratory arrest and a pancreatic tumor at about 3 p.m. on Oct. 5″, and noted Steve’s occupation was listed as “entrepreneur” on his death certificate.
